April 22 Sketch

April 22 Entry

A Bernese Mountain Dog, or in German, a Berner Sennenhund.

No more chills, slept yesterday with 3 blankets. My nose feels filled in with concrete haha!

Reading "House of Leaves", which was recommended by Amazon since I ordered "S" a while ago. Unfortunately not so impressed. I understand it's a form of art and symbolism to stylize type and page layout but cramming a million words in size 4 font on some pages or 5 words per page for 20 pages and random (oh excuse me, carefully selected) intervals and making whirly text or text reflected backwards or random philosophical footnotes (or footnotes of footnotes of footnotes) in Latin, Spanish, German, etc. does NOT automatically make a GOOD STORY.  Good thing I ordered the Foundation Series by Asimov as well.

St Bernards are cute too. I think his head was even wider in the reference pic.  I am "as sick as a dog" at the moment so the drawing seems appropriate.

I was happy though, to find this note on the table when I woke up. ("Get well soon")

April 19 Sketch

I find pugs incredibly ugly but they area favorite pet in this area of Germany.
This sketch isn't so good. I did it pretty quick because I want to relax tonight!

April 18 Sketch

April 18 Entry

The Sally Lightfoot also has the same name as yesterday's crab, the Red Rock Crab, so I was confused when I saw different crabs in the references (this happens a lot with fish as well). Well, this is the first colored pictures in a while. The Leuchtturm handled the water OK, but the paper has buckled considerably.

April 17 Sketch

April 17 Entry

The camera app I use to take my pictures seems to have gone through a massive upgrade recently and now it's making automatic effects! I'll get it sorted out for next time. Anyway this picture is not so awesome, I'm confused about its face.

Arrow crabs are found along the Atlantic, living among coral reefs. I drew this while skyping with my mom.

April 14 Sketch

The velvet crab is also called a devil crab and lives off British waters. It has blood red eyes! (again, I ran out of space at the bottom of the page)

Up next, a fiddler crab. I think I'll stick to crabbies this week; they are interesting to draw!

April 11 Sketch

April 11 Entry

When you eat shrimps in the restaurant, they are usually all curled up and red. In the water they do look incredibly insect-like. By the way, I used the wrong Japanese character. I think the common kanji would be 海老.

We'll do a different sort of sea animal today... Did you know that squids have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom? Their eye diameter can be up to 25 cm (size of your head)

Another fish that needs the bigger sketchbook. I suppose since it's April now I should stop with drawing fish. Soon...

April 4 Sketch

April 4 Entry

Sablefish, fished mainly in Canada, US and Japan. Unfortunately I couldn't find many reference pictures for it (outside of cooked dishes). I guess that's the problem when you taste delicious.

April 3 Sketch

April 3 Entry

Sadly, Tommy's sketchbook is almost near it's end. I bought a Leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook to replace it. It's bigger and thought a sunfish would be a nice trial since it would actually fit on the paper! In the end I am really pleased with the paper quality. Very smooth and blendable. I also ordered the fixative spray so hopefully my sketches won't smudge anymore. Woohoo!

April 1 Photo

April 1 Entry

I bought some crackling nail polish from the Swedish brand Isadora. Kinda tacky, but I imagine it could look really cool in black/white and black/red!
